Gisela Kingsbury | Germany to Canada | Real Immigrant Story

Gisela Kingsbury was born in Germany during the final years of the Second World War. She grew up in a loving family where education, discipline, and responsibility were deeply valued. As a young woman, she worked in an orphanage, caring for children, but she always felt there was a much bigger world waiting beyond the borders of Germany.

Rather than escaping hardship, Gisela was searching for opportunity. She wanted to experience different cultures, different languages, and different religions. Her curiosity about the world eventually led her to make one of the biggest decisions of her life.

In October 1965, at the age of 22, Gisela left Germany and boarded a passenger ship bound for Canada. She arrived carrying only 80 Canadian dollars, believing she would stay for just one year before returning home.

Canada, however, changed her life.

She discovered a country where she felt free to become herself, build her future, and embrace the diversity she had always wanted to experience. The one-year adventure became a lifetime. More than six decades later, Canada is the place she proudly calls home.

Today, Gisela reflects on her immigration journey with gratitude and honesty. Her story is not simply about moving to another country—it is about curiosity, courage, and the willingness to leave behind certainty in order to discover a new life.
